  • any suggestions?!

so um, i'm thinking of taking a year off of university and going off to live on my own for a year in washington to think over about my life and which direction i'm going to go in for the future- any suggestions on surviving? talking to the parents, financial issues, which jobs to go for...thanks! :)

background info for those of you who are still interested in reading on: currently a full-time student double majoring in chinese language and literature and soon to be adding on computer science engineering (still quite a beginner in programming though...) dependent on my stereotypical asian parents for tuition fees. have not worked at a job before other than helping out my parents doing mailings and some computer work (mostly video editing)

    DO I HAVE A CHANCE?

Not enough information to give advice, but here are a few suggestions from a mother who has seen all four of her kids graduate.  Get a job.  It will take some of the load off your parents and it will help you understand life better. Perhaps you could work in the language lab or as a student assistant.  One daughter did those and loved them.  Don't try to get too many degrees at once.  Finish one and then go back for a Master's.  It is worth more in the long run, and you graduate more quickly, which gives a sense of accomplishment.  I would not recommend taking a year off unless it is to learn to support yourself and pursue an internship that will further your future career.  To some, college is like a buffet, and they want everything.  Actually, you only need enough for a good meal. As fascinating as it is, you cannot get a degree in everything that is interesting.  Good luck in making your decision.  By the way, summer school usually leads to exhaustion.  I recommend taking summers off to work and travel.

@Gr8Grace - ah, thank you for the advice. i was actually thinking of working at Starbucks since it seems like all of the positions as student assistant or lab assistant requires programming languages that im not familiar with. im taking the year off in order to figure out what i truly want in life and to differentiate my thoughts from my parents (up till recently my thoughts mirrored theirs). i would stay in my university and finish my first degree but i cant guarantee that they'll accept me back for computer science engineering (unfortunately i am not very good at it). and yeah- i'm only taking one class this summer.
